The Winnipeg Ostomy Association (WOA) a self-help group formed in 1972 to assist people with ostomy and related surgeries in Winnipeg and the surrounding area. We are strictly a volunteer organization, depending on member involvement to operate and on membership dues to pay expenses. The WOA has a current membership of 260 and there are about 3000 ostomates in the Province of Manitoba. The Winnipeg Ostomy Association (WOA) is a chapter of the United Ostomy Association of Canada, Inc. (UOA of C), a national voluntary health organization dedicated to assisting people who have or will have intestinal or urinary tract diversions. We provide a visiting program to those having ostomy related sureries.

The Visiting Program was the flagship program of the United Ostomy Association. Although UOA has shut down, nearly all of UOA’s former chapters continue to provide a Visiting Program. This has offered person-to-person support to people undergoing ostomy or related surgery, as well as their family members, so they can achieve optimal physical and social rehabilitation.
A visitor is an experienced, adjusted, and trained person who has been determined to be qualified to visit, who participates in recertification training regularly, and who maintains membership in an ostomy support group. This includes both rehabilitated patients and members of their family unit.
Visitors are careful to comply with the HIPAA Privacy Rules (effective as of April 2003) when obtaining referrals from medical personnel.
Visits can be made during the hospital stay, in the home or some other convenient location. Phone visits are becoming the most common type due to the short hospital stay.
To schedule a visit, you may contact one of the former UOA Chapters or one of the former UOA Networks.
